Choosing Your A-Level Subject Combination in Uganda: How It Affects Your University Course Options

One of the most consequential academic decisions a Ugandan student makes happens at the end of Senior Four: which A-Level subject combination to pursue. That choice doesn’t just shape your next two years — it determines which university courses you’ll even be eligible to apply for. Here’s how to think it through.

Why your combination matters more than you might realise

Ugandan universities set minimum subject requirements for most degree programmes. Want to study Medicine? You’ll typically need a strong combination including Biology and Chemistry. Engineering programmes usually require Physics and Mathematics. Law programmes often look for strong performance in Economics, History, or Literature alongside good overall grades. Choosing a combination without checking these requirements first is one of the most common — and most avoidable — regrets students describe later.

Common combinations and the doors they tend to open

  • PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics): Engineering, Computer Science, Architecture, and most physical-science degrees.
  • PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology): Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, and other health-science programmes.
  • HEG / HEL (History, Economics, Geography / Literature): Law, Social Sciences, Journalism, International Relations, and Development Studies.
  • Economics-heavy combinations (with Mathematics): Business, Economics, Finance, Actuarial Science, and Statistics.

These are general patterns, not guarantees — each university and faculty publishes its own minimum entry requirements, and they can change from year to year, so always confirm directly with your target institution.

Plan backwards from the career, not forwards from convenience

A combination that feels easier today can quietly close the door on a course you’ll want in two years. Before you choose, ask: what are two or three degree programmes I could see myself doing — and what do they actually require? Working backwards from real entry requirements is far more reliable than picking subjects based on which teachers you like or which classes your friends are joining.

What if you’re unsure which courses fit your combination?

This is exactly the kind of question that’s hard to research subject-by-subject and university-by-university — which is why we’re building a Uganda subject-combination to course matcher directly into Scholarza. It will let you enter your current or intended A-Level combination and see which university courses you’re realistically positioned for, so you can plan your scholarship and application strategy with much more clarity.
