Stipendium Hungaricum 2027/28 – Fully Funded Study in Hungary (Expected Deadline 15 January 2027)

Tuition + monthly stipend + accommodation contribution + health insurance
Deadline: January 15, 2027

Stipendium Hungaricum is the Hungarian government’s flagship scholarship for international students, run by the Tempus Public Foundation for Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It supports Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral study at Hungarian universities for citizens of more than 100 partner countries.

Deadline (expected): the 2027/28 call had not been confirmed when we checked. Based on previous cycles, the online portal opens around November and closes around 15 January 2027 at 14:00 CET. The portal closes without extensions, so verify the exact date on the official Stipendium Hungaricum website as soon as the call is published.

What It Covers

  • Tuition at a Hungarian state university
  • A monthly stipend
  • A dormitory or accommodation contribution
  • Medical insurance

Tempus notes that the stipend does not cover all living costs, so plan a small personal budget.

How the Process Works

  1. Check that your country is a sending partner and read the Call for Applications and Application Guide.
  2. Choose up to two study programmes in order of preference and, for doctoral study, secure a supervisor.
  3. Submit the full application through the official portal before the deadline. A saved but unsubmitted application counts as not submitted, and each uploaded file is limited to 4 MB.
  4. Your sending partner (usually a ministry or agency in your country) nominates candidates to Tempus around February 2027.
  5. Universities hold entrance exams between March and May 2027, with a minimum score of 56 out of 100 expected.
  6. Results arrive around June to July, and studies begin in September 2027.

Tips

Contact your national sending partner early, because some countries run their own nomination step before the central deadline. Prepare transcripts, motivation letter, language certificates and medical documents ahead of time, since the portal rewards complete, correctly formatted files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can African students apply? Many African countries are partner countries. Check the official country list for yours.

Is the programme taught in English? Many programmes are, though some require Hungarian or other languages.

Why Stipendium Hungaricum Is Popular

The programme is one of the largest government scholarship schemes in Europe, and it attracts students because tuition is covered at a state university, a monthly stipend is provided, and the cost of living in Hungary is lower than in many Western European countries. It is open at Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral level, and many programmes are taught in English. For applicants from partner countries, the nomination system also means the competition is partly within your own country rather than worldwide.

Understanding the Sending Partner System

Hungary signs bilateral agreements with partner countries. In each country, a ministry, agency or university acts as the sending partner, which collects applications or advises on them, performs its own checks where applicable, and nominates the best candidates to Tempus. This is why you should contact your sending partner early. Some countries add their own deadlines or forms, and a few require a hard-copy step in addition to the online application.

Eligibility and Documents

  • Citizenship of an eligible partner country
  • Academic qualifications that meet the requirements for your chosen level, such as a secondary school certificate for a Bachelor’s or a Bachelor’s degree for a Master’s
  • Proof of language skills as specified by the university, usually English for English-taught programmes
  • A motivation letter, CV and academic transcripts
  • A medical certificate, which is submitted later in the process
  • For doctoral applicants, a research plan and a confirmed supervisor

Choosing Your Programmes

You can choose up to two study programmes in order of preference. Check the university’s own requirements for each, including entrance exams, portfolios or interviews. Because the nomination and exam system moves quickly, do not leave programme research until January.

Preparing for the Entrance Exam

Many universities hold entrance exams between March and May, and applicants generally need at least 56 out of 100 to proceed. The format depends on the programme and may be written, oral or online. Study the subject syllabus that the university publishes and practise past-style questions if they are available.

Life in Hungary

Budapest and cities such as Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs host large international student communities. The stipend and dormitory contribution cover many basic costs, but Tempus notes that it does not meet all living expenses, so plan a modest personal budget. Check the visa and residence permit procedure with the Hungarian embassy in your country once you receive a place.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Missing the 14:00 CET time stamp on the deadline day
  • Saving an application without pressing the final submit button
  • Uploading files larger than the 4 MB limit
  • Ignoring the instructions of your national sending partner
  • Choosing programmes without checking the language of instruction

More Questions Applicants Ask

Can African students apply? Many African countries are partners. Check the official list for your country.

Is there an application fee? Read the Call for Applications for the current rules.

Can I apply twice? Previous applicants can often apply again in a new cycle, subject to the rules of that year.

Final Checklist Before You Submit

  • You have confirmed your country is a partner and found your national sending partner
  • You have read the official Call for Applications and Application Guide for 2027/28
  • You have chosen up to two programmes and checked the language and entrance requirements
  • Your documents are scanned clearly, named properly and under 4 MB each
  • You pressed the final submit button and saved the confirmation

Apply for other funding too, because a nomination is not guaranteed. If you are an undergraduate applicant, check whether your sending partner publishes its own timeline, since several countries close earlier than the central deadline. If you are a doctoral applicant, start the supervisor search now because email replies from academics can be slow.

Finally, protect yourself against fraud. The scholarship application is free to start on the official portal, and nobody can guarantee a place in return for payment. Use only the official Stipendium Hungaricum website and your government’s sending partner for instructions.
