Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS) Program 2026–2027

The Japan Africa Dream Scholarship (JADS) is a fully funded master’s scholarship co-implemented by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Government of Japan that empowers high-achieving African students to pursue postgraduate studies at select universities in Japan. The program’s overarching purpose is to build leadership and technical capacity in sectors critical for Africa’s socio-economic development such as energy, agriculture, health, environmental sustainability, and engineering. This initiative supports the AfDB’s “High 5” priorities—Feed Africa, Light up and Power Africa, Industrialize Africa, Integrate Africa, and Improve the Quality of Life for Africa’s people—by equipping scholars with advanced skills to drive innovation and solutions at home.

The scholarship covers full tuition for up to 24 months, a monthly living stipend, round-trip airfare between the student’s home country and Japan, and health insurance provided through the host university. In some cases, an additional six months of preparatory language or internship support and research financial support for thesis work may be available. To qualify, applicants must be citizens of African Development Bank member countries, be 35 years old or younger, and have a bachelor’s degree alongside strong academic achievement and evidence of leadership potential. Candidates are expected to return to their home countries upon completing the program to contribute to national or continental development. Typical application windows are tied to Japanese university admissions cycles with deadlines in early 2026 for September 2026 enrollment (often around January/February), and deadlines may vary by institution or intake plan.
